Healthy Wellness Dog Food Reviews in the Market this Year

If you are a careful buyer like me, you may have already read other wellness dog food reviews on the internet. That is a smart thing to consider literally hundreds of products out in the market today.

It’s a good time to have choices, but not all of these products are as good as they are made out to be.

For this review, I will focus on the Wellness brand and their various recipes. I will look into which specific products are the best in their menu, and see their health benefits among others. I will also list down the advantages and disadvantages of the brand.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Wellness Dog Food Products

The product boasts of having a thoughtful approach when it comes to what goes in and what stays out of their recipes. The ingredients are carefully chosen for their nutritional benefits as well as their likeability among our beloved dogs.

Here is an outline of the advantages and disadvantages of the brand as a whole.

Advantages

Reasonably Priced

Overall, Wellness products are reasonably priced. Their more expensive items like the Wellness CORE Natural Grain Free Dry Dog Food is a bit more expensive than what I would normally buy, but it is high in nutritional content.

My dog is not a big fan of dry food so I haven’t bought this product specifically. However, based on its nutritional content, I can tell it’s worth the price.

They Offer Options

As mentioned earlier, my dog is not into dry food. However, he enjoys the Wellness Complete Health Natural Wet Canned Dog Food. Like the previous item, it is all natural and rich in nutrients.

My dog loves the Chicken and Sweet Potato recipe, but it also comes in lamb and chicken stew flavours.

They Have Products for All Ages

One thing that I’m particular with when it comes to dog food is the nutritional content and how it is appropriate for my dog’s age. Puppies have different nutritional needs than senior dogs. It is so good that Wellness offers options for all the age groups.

Disadvantages

May Cause Loose, Watery Stools

The disadvantages are more specific than the advantages since having loose, watery stools may be specific for certain dog breeds or individual dogs.

For example, when my dog was a puppy, he had an adverse reaction to the Wellness Soft Puppy Bites, but I did not notice the same effect on my first two dogs.

The nutritional benefits still make it worth a try, but discontinue use the moment you notice adverse effects. The same goes for other products.

Not All Dogs will Like It

With dog food, it’s either a hit or a miss. My dog, for example, did not like the Wellness Complete Health Natural Dry Dog Food so I decided to give the wet canned dog food a try.

In terms of nutritional content, both have proven to have the same benefits. It is the storage that can be tricky with wet dog food compared to the dry ones.

A Close Look at the Recipes

Chicken

The main ingredient for most of these products is chicken. While this is good quality in general, most raw chicken is about 80% water. This moisture is lost after cooking so the meat becomes only a fraction of its original weight.

In other words, the finished product will only contain a tiny fraction of this ingredient in its overall content after it has been processed.

Chicken and Salmon Meal

Compared to fresh chicken, this ingredient contains 300% more protein. It is known as a meat concentrate so it makes up for the missing fresh chicken bits that are lost in the process.

Salmon meal, on the other hand, is another meat concentrate, which is a good source of protein.

Ground Brown Rice

Also known as rice flour, this ingredient is made from rice either white or brown. It is used as substitute for wheat flour, hence making the product gluten-free.

Barley

This starchy carbohydrate is a good source of healthy nutrients and fiber. However, although this cereal grain provides energy, this does not really have nutritional value to dogs.

Peas and Oats

Although it is another good source of carbohydrates and natural fiber, peas also contain about 25% protein. This is why checking the other protein sources of this dog food is important since too much protein is not helpful for your dog’s health either.

Oats, on the other hand, is a good source of minerals, dietary fiber, and B-vitamins.

Chicken Fat

Although this does not sound healthy at all, chicken fat is actually good for your dogs. It has high levels of linoleic acid, a kind of omega-6 fatty acid that your dog needs to remain overall functional.

Other Ingredients

There are other ingredients that, realistically, do not really have any bearing to the quality of the product. However, some ingredients have been considered controversial since they are either overhyped or have questionable effects to the overall health of your dog.

For example, many dog owners question the presence of garlic in some Wellness products. Although there have been health benefits from adding garlic, it is also closely associated to body anaemia in dogs known as Heinz.

Although the garlic content may be too little to cause subclinical damage to your dog’s red blood cells, I wonder if this has any health benefits either considering the amount is inconsequential to begin with.

Healthy Content

For sure, Wellness dog foods are above-average in the scale of dog treats and meals. However, I am more focused on not just the quality of the ingredients, but the amount of each ingredient in the product as well.

If you look into the fat-to-protein ratio, for example, most of these Wellness products fall around 52%. This means it has about a moderate amount of meat so it has average acceptable levels of fat, protein, and carbohydrates that most dog food don’t have.

The Verdict…

As a conclusion, I think these products are definitely worth a try. It has moderate amounts of protein, as it is mostly plant-based, so you don’t have to worry about health problems in general.

The bottom line is, Wellness Dog Food products are highly recommended, but at the end of the day, you will have to observe how your dog reacts to the food.

Personally, I experiment with different products. With enough research and information, I see to it I provide enough nutrients for my beloved dogs.

However, it is also necessary to include exercise and rest in the mix. After feeding them healthy foods, I see to it we have at least an hour worth of walks or playtime and then I make sure they have a comfortable and stress-free resting environment.

I think these are some of the best ways to keep them healthy in general. With the food, I don’t rely heavily on one brand. However, Wellness products have been quite good so far.

Although I am keeping a close look on product recalls as it has happened before with this brand, I would still recommend it to dog lovers out there.
